How to Derestrict E-Bike (Easiest Working Method)

how to derestrict my ebike

Yes, it is possible to derestrict an ebike’s speed limit but it is not possible on every ebike. but why is that so? How are we gonna do that? To find out you need to read this whole guide to understand the following things.

To increase the top speed limit, you need a chip that helps in derestricting. Well, which one to use, do you have any idea Jacob?

Yes, while I was researching for speed-tuning chips for my ebike I found only 2. One is SpeedBox and another is Volspeed.

Ride an ebike in the UK at 15.5m/h with a throttle only, How? 👈 Find out here

  • VolSpeed – It is limited to 3 brands, and the top speed is limited to 45kmph. It is good for the EU market as their max speed limit is 15.5mph and the company itself is based in Germany. So, in terms of delivery and other things, EU people should not worry.
  • SpeedBox – Top speed goes up to 99kmph, makes chips for multiple brands and better customer support plus they are very old in the market.

Note: Installation and tuning processes are the same for both chips.

For derestricting speed limit, I gonna use the SpeedBox. If you live in any country of the EU then you can order it from VolSpeed.

SpeedBox supports Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, OLI, Giant, Flyon, Panasonic, Brose, Bafang & Impulse e-bike systems.

If you don’t know which speedbox chip you should buy, you can check Speedbox Buyer’s Guide.

Pros and Cons of Removing Speed Limiter from your E-Bike

Pros

  1. Better Off-Roading Experience: If your ebike has a good suspension and great tires then higher speed will give you a better off-roading experience. It will become very easy to ride over hurdles, big rocks etc.
  2. Increased Speed: It’s obvious removing the speed limiter will increase the speed of your ebike and you can use the motor’s full capacity.
  3. Reduce Travel Time: Higher speed can reduce your commuting time. This can be particularly helpful when climbing steep hills or riding with heavy loads.
  4. More Fun: After de-restricting the ebike, it creates some extra excitement to ride the ebike. As many people enjoy riding vehicles at high speed.

Cons

  1. Legal Issues: Riding an ebike more than it’s legal speed it’s an offence and you can be ticketed by the cop if they catch you. You should be careful and ride in private spaces, the countryside etc.
  2. Safety Concerns: “Speed thrills but it kills” Higher speeds increase the risk of accidents. E-bikes are typically designed for speeds within regulated limits, and going beyond these may result in loss of control, especially in busy or urban environments.
  3. Battery Drain: Riding at a higher speed consumes more energy and you may find that your range decreases significantly, requiring more frequent charging. Because the company fit batteries according to their calculations and the system which they have made.
  4. Increased Wear and Tear: “If a motor can go up to 1000RPM and you try to get more RPM from it by overclocking, it’s obvious the motor will break sooner than expected” It’s just an example but you can face issues with tires, chains, battery and etc.

The warranty will not be void because you can easily undo the modifications and the company will never get to know. So, I’m not adding the “Warranty will be void” point in the cons list.

Equipment Required

  1. Speed Tuning Chip (SpeedBox)
  2. Wrench
  3. Screwdriver (According to your ebike)

In the above “Equipment Required” section you saw the speed-tuning chip (SpeedBox) but why am I gonna use speedbox and not any other speed-tuning chip? BTW what is a speed-tuning chip?

Let’s discuss,

Warning!

Drive in a private area or race track, etc. The manufacturer and author of this post will not take any responsibility if anything wrong happens. This type of modified electric bike on public roads is against the law.

For Tuning SpeedBox (Activating/Deactivating)

9.9km/h means 99km/h

Every ebike system has a different way of installing, activating/deactivating Speedbox, you can visit their YouTube channel for the installation guide of your brand.

Remember: Do not change any settings while riding.

Alternative Way to Get Top Speed

There is one more way to trick the system and get a higher speed than the default but it doesn’t work on every ebike. Let me give you a little overview of which trick I’m talking about.

Is It Worth Derestricting eBike using SpeedBox?: My Experience

It’s fun derestriciting ebike speed and looks different in public, that’s obvious you can ride in public because it’s against the law but you can drive it in the countryside, in private areas or on race tracks.

If you ask my experience, overall it was great, the installation process was easy, no complexity in uninstalling or updating firmware. But I don’t use it frequently because it impacts the motor and battery both. After all, we are overclocking the system which is not recommended by the company and in the long run it will have a bad impact ebike.

If you’re a person who loves tweaking their gadgets and is open to test then you can give it a try. One thing I liked the most about speedbox is much more optimised and their customer support is super active and always ready to help in many different languages.
